CILICIA. Germanicopolis. Hadrian, 117-138. Diassarion (Orichalcum, 24 mm, 9.23 g, 5 h). ΑΥΤΟΚΡΑΤωΡ ΚΑΙСΑΡ ΑΔΡΙΑΝΟС Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Hadrian to right. Rev. ΑΔΡΙΑΝΗ ΓΕΡΜΑΝΙΚΟΠ Zeus standing front, head to left, holding patera over eagle in his right hand and long scepter in his left. RPC III 3209.10 (this coin). SNG Leypold 2362 (same dies). SNG von Aulock 8674 (same dies). Very rare. A lovely example with an attractive green patina. Minor areas of weakness, otherwise, good very fine.

The city of Germanicopolis was founded by the Graeco-Armenian King Antiochios IV of Commagene in honor of his Roman patron Germanicus. Its only coinage dates to the time of Hadrian, whose name it bore as an epithet.
